Short answer: The free rental assistance team hired by the City of Rotterdam has been disbanded. It ceased operations in six neighborhoods on April 1, 2025, and in the rest of the city in May 2026. The city now assists tenants directly through the rent calculator and the Hotline for Unfair Rental Practices at weetwatjehuurt.nl. You can apply for a rent reduction yourself at the Huurcommissie, or you can leave it to me.

What happened to the rental team in Rotterdam?

For many years, the City of Rotterdam hired a commercial service provider to help tenants free of charge with rent, maintenance, and legal matters at the Huurcommissie. That assignment has ended. According to the city council, the rental team was active in Carnisse, Oud-Charlois, Tarwewijk, Bloemhof, Hillesluis, and Oud-Mathenesse until April 1, 2025, and in the other neighborhoods until May 2026.

The municipal council states that it is now organizing assistance for tenants in a different way. Since the Affordable Rent Act and the Good Landlord Act took effect, the municipality has been able to take action itself against excessive rent or a landlord who behaves improperly, using coercive measures if necessary.

What is the municipality doing on its own right now?

  • The rent calculator on weetwatjehuurt.nl. There, you can see if your rent is higher than what the law allows.
  • The Hotline for Unfair Rental Practices, on the same website and by calling 14 010. Reports are forwarded to municipal inspectors, who can take action against the landlord.

Good to know: The municipality enforces the rules. That’s different from a rent reduction for you at the Huurcommissie, using the money you overpaid. You can submit that request yourself, or someone else can do it on your behalf.

Can you go to the Huurcommissie?

Yes. You must submit the request yourself and pay the processing fee (€25 for a tenant). If you’ve been living there for some time and would like to have your rent reduced based on certain criteria, you should first send your landlord a proposal. Only if he does not agree to it can the request be sent to the Huurcommissie. If you are within six months of the start of your lease, you can have the initial rent reviewed immediately. You can read more about the duration in the article regarding the processing time for a case.

Or leave it to me

As a rental law specialist, I'll handle everything with your landlord and, if necessary, with the Huurcommissie, including in Rotterdam. You complete the free huurprijscheck, send in your lease agreement, and sign the authorization form; I'll take care of the rest. I am not part of the rental team and do not work for the city.

You don't pay until afterward, once your landlord has agreed to my proposal or if the Huurcommissie has granted the rent reduction. You’ll then pay me a one-time fee equal to 3 times the monthly reduction, including 21% VAT and all fees. After that, the lower rent is all yours, and I don’t charge anything for any rent you get back. More on this page prices.
