I was paying €820.18 a month for a 29 m² studio and thought that was rather a lot. When an advert from Huurfix popped up, I thought: I can always try and see if there’s anything to be gained. So I decided to go with Huurfix.

I still find the ratio between rent and living space on the high side, but that turns out to be simply normal in the Netherlands. I can’t wait until I can one day buy something of my own.

The process took six months, mainly because of the heavy workload at the Huurcommissie, the Dutch rent tribunal. My questions were always answered fairly quickly, though personally I would have appreciated an unprompted interim update now and then, as six months is quite a long time to wait. In the end my rent was reduced by almost €40 a month. Not the very biggest reduction Huurfix has arranged, but every little helps. The money it brings in simply goes straight back to Uncle DUO, so that I’m free of my student debt sooner and can buy a house sooner.
