My girlfriend and I have been living together in our home in Utrecht for a few years now. The rent of €1,500 was acceptable at first, because we were struggling to find anything in Utrecht that met our wishes. Around us we also saw plenty of homes with a similar rent.

Knowing the rents in the Netherlands and in Utrecht, we weren’t surprised. Still, we were regularly astonished by the ratio between the rent and the number of square metres you get for it. At some point we used the online assessment tools of the Huurcommissie, the Dutch rent tribunal, to check whether our rent was actually reasonable.
